UD football will play DSU for first time in regular season

Apart from a first round meeting in the 2007 FCS playoffs, UD and Del State's football teams have never met. Despite the fact that the schools are only 45 miles apart, they've somehow managed to avoid bumping into each other in regular season play for the 82 seasons that both teams have coexisted. Though there were quickly refuted allegations of racism (DSU is a historically black school), UD quelled most controversy with a 44-7 thrashing of the Hornets in those '07 playoffs.

It seems like a sure bet that will soon change, as The News Journal's Kevin Tresolini is reporting that a press conference later today should reveal some drastic scheduling changes in regards to UD's downstate neighbor. According to the plan, UD and DSU will meet this regular season on Sept. 19th, and then annually after that until 2013. The seemingly spontaneous scheduling change which allowed for DSU's insertion into the upcoming season's schedule was caused by Furman's withdrawal on that date so they could play Missouri.

Update (12:46 PM): The University of Delaware has made it official! UD and DSU have scheduled four regular season meetings. The teams will meet in September of 2009, 2012, 2013, and 2014, each time at UD's 22,000 seat stadium. Hopefully this will be a competitive series and create some much anticipated in-state rivalry between the two teams.
