Delaware State-Delaware football trophy named "First State Cup"

After over 4,000 names suggested and months of debate, the trophy for the first regular season football match-up between Delaware and Delaware State has been named the "First State Cup."
The News Journal Media group asked fans to suggest names, from which they chose four for students to vote from. Over 6,000 students chose between "Battle for the Saddle," "Battle for the Hatchet," "the First State Cup," and "The Diamond State Cup."
The rivalry, which has been dubbed the "Route 1 Rivalry," will kick off September 19 at Delaware Stadium. It will be aired live by STN on five television stations and over seven television markets.
The Hens are expected to win favorably, largely due to their 44-7 route over the Hornets in the 2007 Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, however anticipation for the event has been growing for decades and a large turnout both at Delaware Stadium and in television ratings is expected.
